KNITTING BEHIND BARS
Knitting Behind Bars is a knitting program for male prisoners, founded in 2009 by Lynn Zwerling of Columbia, Maryland. The program’s main aim is to help the inmates grow important social and personal skills before re-entering the outside world. My intent with this project was to humanize the inmates involved in Knitting Behind Bars, highlighting the freedom from judgments, monotony, and violence that knitting provides. It is an homage to the participating inmates and the small steps they took to rebuild themselves, and the women who helped them along the way.
